This summer I created a window display for Providence Optical in Rhode Island. My friend and fellow artist Dan Cogan and I had a lot of fun brainstorming the ideas for this window. The owner, Onega Astaltsova, was a pleasure to meet and work with in designing her storefront window which was to be displayed during the Providence International Art Festival that came through in June. Below are some pictures taken during the process and final outcome.

Here is the little blurb we used to describe the work in the papers:

Stimuleye is a storefront window installation crafted out of white paper by the artists Janet Croog and Dan Cogan. The concept was inspired by the premise of the shop itself, where the focus is vision. The installation is a visual stimulus designed to examine the eye through the use of its medium and translucent colored lenses. Providence Optical is located at 210 Westminster St in downtown Providence.

There’s no one on earth who knows so many stories as Ole Lukoie-he certainly can tell them!

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s story of Ole Lukoie, I have created three paper sculptures to illustrate the magic of Hjalmar’s dreams. This body of work has created within me a new passion for paper sculpture. If I can continue this type of illustration, and I’m certain I will, I’ll be a happy gal. Making art from paper evokes a very unique feeling for me, a feeling that I cannot equate to painting. Light and shadow brings these illustrations to life, and I’m in awe every time I hold a new paper character in my hand.

I took some of these photos myself, but I also had the help of an awesome photographer/videographer, Dylan DeGeorge, who took some good shots of my pieces. He’s got some great work, and you can find @dylan.d.george on Instagram, too.

Shubert Theater celebrated its 100 year anniversary last month and I was lucky enough to be a part of it. I was commissioned alongside a team of Paier College of Art students by the Shubert Theater, the Shops at Yale, and the New Haven Green to decorate the storefronts yet again with white paper sculptures. Shubert Theater even had us create a large piece for their front window. You can see some photos below.

The paper sculptures in each window down Chapel Street in New Haven represented famous musicals that went through the Shubert Theater over this past century. 11 stores participated, plus the Shubert’s window. There were about 30 artists working together on teams of 3-5 people. This project was a lot of fun, but very time consuming on a tight schedule. We barely had a month to make this happen so I was at Paier every day, working late into the night. It was well worth the effort, especially since I got to work alongside other creative and inspiring artists.

The pieces I designed were for the musical Annie as well as four panels representing history scenes in 1914. The panels show guests of Shubert Theater’s opening night on December 11, 1914. They are walking through the snow by the Taft hotel toward the theater and entering the theater. Many students assisted me in completing these pieces, I could not have done it without them.

The large marquee in Shubert’s window was a collaboration between many artists as well. The experience of working in a group with these guys has been unique and unforgettable.

Thanks to all the students working diligently, we got the project completed on time and installed just before Thanksgiving. We were under the direction of Vladimir Shpitalnik. My fellow alumni, Dan Cogan, and I were brought in to assist Vladimir and the students. The project was a big success!

Shubert Theatre Celebrates 100 Years – Historical Commemoration

Last month I was hired by Griffin Hospital to create the table centerpieces for their Gala held at the Oakdale Theater. I worked with my friend, Dan Cogan, and we created 30 of these lovely pieces. These are designed to be lit up with LED lights, so the effect with shadows is beautiful!
